When 21 geeks join a videoconference, anything can happen…

Last night we had our first videoconference. Test started at 7:30pm and meeting ended at… 1:30AM! (and just because there was a blackout on my street).

I didn’t expect this sucess, however, I embrace it. Maybe our community just need to use tools that aproach them and give them an oportunity to give faces to names and nicks. Last night was a clear example of this, where we had 21 people having an EXTRAORDINARY hangout like I had never seen… I can be completely honest and say that was as productive as a FUDcon (maybe someone can jump with an online FAD? :D )

I didn’t had a prepared conference for this time, since mostly I wanted to know how has been for Amber Graner and Selena Deckelmann to be FOSS contributors, their experience, ideas and feedback; however, everything took a different direction before and after that conversation that the 3 of us had. I need to say THANK YOU SO VERY VERY MUCH (yes, awful sentence) specilly to our amazing invited, Amber and Selena, who show us a lot of reasons to be part of FOSS communities, to keep learning, to keep teaching… and to keep having fun! but also I want to thank to the rest of the crew that join us: Mark Terranova, Alejandro Perez, Hector Alonso Gonzalez Mata, Hedayet Mabrook, Clint Savage, Pat Mcgovern, Carlos Reges, Nemecis Rojas, John Dulaney, Vinil V. Menon, Abdel Gadiel Martinez Lassonde, Oliver Rivas, Ben Williams, Miguel Alvarado, Garry Elliott, Click Mapa, Sandeep Pothuganti, Junior Paz, Javy Martinez and Fabrizzio Moreno

Now, lets make a list of interesting things that we talk about and let me show you my random notes. Please, know that this is the *crude product* comming out from my head, some of this points (I hope all) will end up beign applied or put into practice. This is not a list of goals (maybe is) but consider ir as one of the best Feedbacks and brainstorms online ever! :P

= Geeks at FOSS =

* Weird names are AWESOME… but please, make sure to have an audio file with a proper pronunciation – Thank you.
* ask about your friends life… they will be happy to share some details with you so you are not just a robot.

= Mentors =

* Fedora has guides for everything, but not to be a mentor (check on this)
* Has to know well how community works
* Need to have amazing people skills, not enough just to be an ambassador

= Ambassadors =

* Must know how to organize an event, learn about logistics, marketing and people skills
* Propose talks for events that you don’t organize
* Try to take fedora to non-fedora places, events and activities
* To be an ambassador you need to have good ideas, but also work on turn them into goals, not only expect that someone will do it for you (or if you can’t, please, make if happen)
* Every member of Fedora IS an ambassador

= Fedora a better place =

* more testers
* Better websites or way to find info at our websites
* More brainstorming, less information meetings… push feedback
* Focus on fulfill ideas, not only give them.
* Show Fedora with more serious marketing (product)
* Help tech people to show themselves more professionals and less hippies
* Marketing are focusing on a few events… what happen with the small events and we need to be and are not fedora specifics
* We need more marketing outside events… if we have 2.000.000 linux users on a country and we only spread fedora on an 200 people event.. we are waisting 1.800.000 potential contributors.
* Daily marketing MATTERS
* Passion at events and focused on fun. Gather together for the fun, not by the tittle
* Don’t join the community expecting to get a job, join it because the fun and with fun, might come a work.
* Curiosity
* Explore and expand what you can do, not what you cannot or don’t know how to do
* Whatever your motivation is… keep being motivated
* Encourage people to make money with FOSS
* Opensource is about friends… so find the right ones and those that make you feel a rockstar and motivate you

* Are you a girl? or just a robot?
* How is to be a community person for you?
* What are your tasks on Free and Open source community?
* Which is the best experience you can remember being a community leader?

* Bring a key people of each team available to allow new contributors to get sponsorship and contribute without have to wait after-event.
* show the simplicity of contribute to fedora with people examples.

Geek Girls aren’t aliens

Am I a girl? yeah… is just that sometimes we spend so much time online that forget that we actually have a body, we need to eat and need to walk. If this is your case, welcome to the new group of people that set names to their gadgets instead to their cats.

Today I had an interesting chat with a contributor that, I just found out, was a lady (after being helping her for about a month or so) we talk about, why are so few women in FOSS projects? I guess this is the question we all made to ourselves (as woman) and many guys do too. I start to point out things that I believe are the main reasons and I would like to share them with you:

The Comparison

I have meet a lot of women who actually code amazing things. Problem are comparisons: “That girl can code as good as a guy” or “She’s almost as good as any of us(guys)”. And we as women do that too sometimes: “I’m as good as any man can be” or “I can code anything that a man can code”.

If we start showing that there is a line to cross, then this line will always exist. This doesn’t happen with religion or skin color, doesn’t matter either with age. Everyone has made that imaginary line between sex gender a pretty clear way to use it as excuse for, either redeem us from our mistakes or to justify our victories.

The Emo-Side

Everyone gets hurt, everyone cries, everyone has bad moments… don’t use that to get more sympathy. If you show everytime that you’re beign disturbed that you need them to stop because you’re a girl, then you’re giving people the right to just keep doing it.

When you read a technical person (either lady or gent) you will find out that topics are never related to their emo-side. They can talk about the next release of X app, or just talk about the weather. That’s why we have -social- places to talk about that. (ej: #Fedora-social where everyone loves bacon…)

You ARE a girl, girls don’t do that

Since we were born we got people telling us what to do and which kind of things a woman was not supose to do. Is amazing to see that many of the geek ladies I have meet didn’t had this kind of parents, Most were fully support to do anything they wanted to.

I’m from LatinAmerica, the place where Novels (Novelas) come from, and we grow waiting for our blue prince who should come to rescue from -whatever-, that we are suposed to be full time moms and our destiny is to make lunchs and dinner in time keeping perfect our makeup. Tv doesn’t teach us to fight for what we want, it only teach us to wait for our destiny. If we show more people doing amazing things, without point out if is a girl or not, then next generations maybe won’t need to think on this issues.

You’re a girl, why don’t you recruit more?

WRONG! I sometimes ask myself… is there a special code that girls have or can use to recruit only girls? a secret society that I don’t know about? From all the women I have meet I think over 80% were recruit by guys. Yes, me too.

Even if I have my own heros and heroines I can only say that for me we are all the same. We might not have the same oportunities in life, same support, or same courage, but at the end, we are the same and we can do whatever we want with our lifes. As long as we keep showing that you own your own life and be a strong and professional woman isn’t *wrong*, then I’m sure we will see more ladies on the tech side.

I don’t know any other geek girl

WUT? I could name so many amazing women that I have the honor to meet, to work with and to follow on their amazing blogs that you would be amazed. Name them all might be imposible, and naming just a few would be not fair, however, let me tell you that maybe the contributor that helped you last time with your code issue was a lady, or the t-shirt you’re wearing was designed by a lady, or the tutorial that you’re following was written or translated by a lady.

The fact that we don’t add a label next to every goal that we have quoting *I have boobs* doesn’t mean that technical and professional women exist. Maybe we just need to be more open, maybe we just need to realize that technology is not about genders, just like we did with ages. I really hope that next time the question *why FOSS doesn’t have more ladies?* you change it by this: *What can I do to bring more ladies to FOSS?*. We all can recruit contributors, just make sure to do it.

Aunque el titulo está en inglés, lo consideré más sencillo para entender. Así es!! Pulgares arriba para las uñas de pinguinos!!!

Sé que hay varias chicas a las que les dá curiosidad mis locas uñas y no es para menos… ¿Qué puedes esperar de las uñas de una geek? En esta ocasión les enseñaré como pintarse sus uñas en la forma de un pinguino… o para las verdaderas geeks un TUX! El video es un poco rápido y tiene una duración de 7:30min, originalmente eran 12:00. Espero lo disfruten!

El día Sábado 18 de Septiembre se celebra a nivel mundial el Día de la Libertad de Software el cual representa un momento en el cual podamos reconsiderar el impacto y la importancia de la tecnología en nuestras vidas, y que los mismos, no estan limitados a nuestro entorno, sino que envuelven oportunidades y personas en todo el camino que se recorre.

Aún con esto en mente (y esta fué la base del día de ayer) esto es un evento, como siempre, para los que desean aprender y conocer sobre el mundo del Software; pero usualmente nadie se acuerda de los geeks y frikis que pasan su vida frente al ordenador desarrollando, organizando y contestando dudas… en base a esto; el día del SFD lo pasamos alejados de todo aparato tecnológico (exceptuando algunos teléfonos) y permitiendonos compartir en familia.

El proximo año realizaremos lo mismo, fotos, comida y amigos en el SFD… ¿ahora si quieres ir?

Les voy a ser completamente honesta…. Usualmente intento ayudar a todas las personas que puedo, bien sea por IRC, por las listas de correo e incluso asistiendo a eventos tanto para difundir conocimiento como para instalar… pero… ¿Qué pasa con los Geeks? ¿Quién le hace un evento a quienes hacen eventos? ¿Quién se da la molestia de preparar -algo- para quienes siempre preparamos todo? So…

Usualmente saben que procuro preparar eventos o reuniones donde siempre podamos enseñar a los demás las bondades del SL… pero ¿Qué les parece si nos reunimos un día solo para conversar, disfrutar y llevarnos un recuerdo?

Por mi parte, creo que lo idóneo sería almorzar juntos (algo que no requiera estar de noche en Caracas) en una zona segura y disfrutar hablando esas mismas pistoladas tecnológicas que hablamos por irc… pero en persona.

Ya que la votación va bastante bien por twitter entonces hagamoslo oficial… Celebremos el SFD de Caracas en Familia y llevemonos un recuerdo :D

Como YO lo único que hago semi-bien es diseñar y ahora tomar fotos, creo que sería lindo llevarnos un recuerdo fotográfico de todos quienes compartimos este gusto por la tecnología, y quienes de forma altruista pretendemos ayudar con nuestros pequeós y grandes aportes… en fin; Quizá esté un poco emo por la partida de Nestor y eso nos haga valorar mucho más que la vida son apenas 5 min que tenemos que aprovechar al máximo… así que hagamoslo :)

Hoy es el 5to día del blog a nivel mundial y pues todos los blogueros que escribimos cuanta pendejada se nos viene a la mente no podemos dejar esta fecha sin… bloguear! Pero… ¿Qué es el BlogDay? Hace un par de días pensando en que ya se acerca el cumpleaños de @richzendy (Geek, friki y nerd desde que nació) obviamente surge la problemática “¿Qué le puedo regalar a mi novio si es geek?”… ese problema está resuelto ya que ellos son felices con una camiseta con algún mensaje divertido o simplemente un gadget (ya le he regalado ambos)… pero a las chicas nos gustan las sorpresas y nos encanta esa sensación de que saben que queríamos ESO exactamente… pero, ¿Qué le puedes regalar a tu novia si es una Geek, friki, Nerd y Gammer? Aquí el asunto se complica.

En fin, obviamente “creo” que me acerco a esa categoría social por lo que recurrí a twitter para hacer una pequeña encuesta… veamos los resultados:

Ahora, analicemos todos los regalos y veamos cual es la mejor opción a seguir dependiendo de la personalidad de tu chica geek:

Si tu chica no tiene suficientes Gadgets algunas buenas opciones de las que por ahí nombraron tanto @almsx como @yuryja, @carlosgr_arahat, @l1r4mus1k e @irmapin, son Ipad, Laptops, Iphones, NexusOne, e incluso una super mega Cámara Fotográfica Profesional. Solo ten cuidado en no darle algo que ya tiene… y con lo del rosado, cuidado y le gusta todo en negro o lila!

Si tu chica tiene muchos gadgets y aún así es femenina es bueno darle un detalle geek que la haga lucir preciosa. Algunas de las ideas tanto de @cludyc, @kamihack fueron zarcillos de tux, algún estuche de maquillaje en forma de tux o piercings

Si tu chica le gustan los juguetes, peluches y demás, las ideas que enviaron tanto @guzman6001 como @jpill y @Fitoria se van por Peluches de Tux gigantes o almohadones con diseños de videojuegos o redes sociales, o incluso un set nuevo de stickers para su Pc

Jamás sobra una franela geek… quizá las ideas de @abr4xas , @jhonber sean buenas dando alguna camiseta geek . Solo ten cuidado de que la camiseta sea geek para ella y no la conviertas en un objeto para indicar que tu eres geek… Recuerda que ella tiene un mensaje que dar, ayúdala con una camiseta

Si tu chica lo tiene literalmente TODO, entonces es mejor irte por las opciones de hacer una manualidad geek o darle un regalo que solo ella pueda disfrutar, quizá la idea de @fix de hacer un corazón con memorias RAM o si tu chica pasa todo el día en el pc la idea de @kamihack de enviarla todo un día a un spa sea un FTW.

¿Qué te falta por lograr como Geek?… by azazelfire
El camino del geek no tiene metas… todos los días salen gadgets nuevos, tecnologías y tendencias, es un camino sin final :) Pero quiero un workstation con 3 monitores, 2nvidia 8300 y un quadcore + 8gb de ram sobre una msi platinium :$

Hola entro todas las noches a ver si hay un nuevo podcast de Gimp, y algunas de ellas no hay :(. ¿Por qué nos maltratas de esa forma? . Queremos, necesitamos, ansiamos un podcast everyday… AHH Y GRACIASSSSS ERES UNICA
Bueno.. hagamos algo, si me pagan por hacer podcast, prometo hacer uno diario… va? :D

¿Qué te impulsa a no usar programas que no posean licencias libres?, ¿no usas Flash Player (de adobe), drivers propietarios o alguna otra cosa no libre?
Claro… me encanta ver videos de youtube y pues utilizo el driver (gnash que es libre), y tengo los codecs de mp3 para escuchar mi música… pero mas nada. No necesito codecs para pelis o más nada que sea propietario (veo pelis en el dvd)

me pusiste a pensar con esta pregunta… e incluso creo que haré un post sobre esto. La comunidad geek venezolana es una de las mas consumistas del mundo, la gente se vuelve loca por los gadgets y la tecnología, pese a que sabemos las restricciones que tenemos. (ojo… geek =! comunidad de SL) aunque a veces pueden ir juntas

¿qué consejo le puedes dar a alguien que quiera tener su propio proyecto 365?
que se mentalice a que es un proceso que lleva esfuerzo y tiempo. Si está en medio de un proyecto muy estresante, o tiene una vida que demanda mucho… mejor es que normalice su día a día antes de empezar un proyecto como este… Tambien existen proyectos semanales, e incluso mensuales, así que pueden comenzar con un proyecto semanal y ver si les rinde el tiempo. :)

Si tienes sed de redes sociales… tienes que probar snaptu. Esta aplicación es bastante intuitiva y de fácil manejo, por lo que si quieres twitter, facebook, flickr, wikipedia y demás, esta es tu solución. Así mismo, muchas personas que han comentado el review del huawei “huawei U9105: Bajo la mira” que fue el que inició todo este asombroso feedback; anexo en el mismo video tutorial como descargar aplicaciones desde el mismo teléfono utilizando el navegador que trae.
